Last night, Gracie and I were honored to attend an event presented by the Hershey Theatre Guild, featuring the unveiling of the upcoming 2016-2017 Broadway Series – the 88th season of entertainment at this beautiful, historic venue in Hershey, PA, The Sweetest Place On Earth. It was a fun event featuring the talents of local high school students, who sang songs to introduce the upcoming shows. Not only am I pleased to share this list of shows with you, I’m excited to see some of them as part of the 2 Year Musical Journey!
Hershey Theatre’s Broadway Series
The variety-filled Broadway season kicks off November 1-6, 2016 with A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love & Murder, a The Tony® Award winner for Best Musical. A Gentleman’s Guide tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession, by any means necessary. The most celebrated musical of the 2013-14 Broadway season, A Gentleman’s Guide received ten 2014 Tony® Award nominations, eventually winning four awards: Best Musical, Direction of a Musical, Book of a Musical, and Best Costume Design. In addition, it won the Best Musical prizes from the Drama League, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle, and received a 2015 Grammy® Award nomination for Best Musical Show Album.
The Book of Mormon will take the stage of the Theatre November 22-27, 2016. The New York Times calls it “the best musical of the century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.” Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it “Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal.” It’s The Book of Mormon, the nine-time Tony Award®-winning Best Musical.
*We were told to use discretion for this one … while it’s supposed to be VERY funny, it’s also not suitable for all audiences, due to lots of bad language, etc.
Hershey Theatre will welcome The Sound of Music March 21-26, 2017. The Hills Are Alive! A brand new production of The Sound of Music, directed by three-time Tony Award® winner Jack O’Brien is touring. The spirited, romantic and beloved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family will once again thrill audiences with its Tony®, Grammy® and Academy Award® winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title song. The Sound of Music enjoyed extraordinary success as the first live television production of a musical in over 50 years when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December, 2013 and was seen by over 44 million people. 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.
Get your dance shoes ready for Motown The Musical at Hershey Theatre from July 19-23, 2017. Motown The Musical is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and so many more. Featuring more than 40 classic hits such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Motown The Musical tells the story behind the hits as Diana, Smokey, Berry and the whole Motown family fight against the odds to create the soundtrack of change in America. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat.
Extra Events at the Theatre
Other events that will be coming to the theatre for the 2016-17 season include the following:
- Elf the Musical
- Into the Woods
Which one are you most excited about?
On the way to the event, Gracie was telling me how we NEED to go to see A Gentlemen’s Guide when it’s on tour somewhere near us. It was the first show introduced at the event. I looked over and her, and she had this HUGE grin on her face! I don’t think she was expecting for it to come THAT close. So, needless to say, that’s the one that Gracie is most excited for.
As for me, I cannot wait for The Sound of Music! I grew up watching the movie on TV every year. I love all the songs. The sneak peek video that was shown last night made me even more excited to see this show LIVE!
