Welcome to this month’s Blogorail Peach Loop. Today we are discussing zoos that your family needs to visit. One of my family’s favorite zoos to visit – and we visit often – is the Cape May County Zoo in Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey.
My family has a family vacation tradition . . . each summer we spend a week in Ocean City, New Jersey. There have been a few exceptions; but, for the most part, we’ve been doing this every summer since the year I was pregnant with my oldest child (now 21!)
We love Ocean City and enjoy spending time on the boardwalk, playing in the sand, and walking (or biking) through the great family-friendly town and visiting the many shops, restaurants, etc. But, we also find that we like to break up our week with a little trip to the zoo. We discovered this zoo many years ago, and we’ve loved it ever since. It’s a beautiful and well-maintained zoo and has served as the backdrop for some of our favorite pictures over the year.
In fact, years ago, I attended a scrapbook party for the first time, and was told to bring 4-5 pictures from a certain event. I chose 4 pictures of Ashley – taken on 4 consecutive visits to the Cape May County Zoo. We would take her picture at the same place each year and it was a neat way to see how she was changing and growing.
As you can see, it’s pretty clear that this zoo has become an important part of our lives over the years. So . . .
Why you should visit the Cape May County Zoo
So many times, it’s been our experience that “you get what you pay for.” That is NOT the case, however, with the Cape May County Zoo. From the very first time we visited, we were so impressed with this place. And the fact that is was admission free (they do take donations) just amazed us. Over the years, we’ve watched the zoo grow, change, and become even better! From year to year, we notice changes and are always amazed that it remains a free admission adventure.
It’s a Short Drive from the New Jersey Beaches
If you’re visiting Ocean City, New Jersey or the beaches at Cape May or Wildwood (or any of the smaller, lesser-known beaches), you’re only a short drive (down the New Jersey Parkway or Rt. 9) from the Cape May County Zoo. If you don’t believe me, check out Google Maps and see for yourself.
They are always working on the grounds around the zoo! The photo spot (in the scrapbook page of Ashley above) is no longer there, but there are so many other beautiful places to enjoy and to take pictures.
There’s a Great Variety of Animals
If you love animals, you’re sure to enjoy a visit to the Cape May County Zoo. Some of our personal favorites to see from year to year are the camels, the big cats, and the peacocks. I also enjoy seeing the bald eagles. Another favorite is the world’s largest rodent – the capybura. While reptiles and amphibians are not my favorites, the zoo has added a reptile house that is very nicely done (if you’re into that sort of thing!) There are also monkeys! And a farm-type petting zoo. And lots and lots of neat birds. Of course, there is a savannah area complete with zebras. I think the zoo grows a bit each time we visit!
It’s a Great Place for a Picnic
In addition to the zoo itself, the park surrounding it is also beautiful. There’s a lake, large playground area, a train that you can ride around the park, and a picnic area. We have enjoyed packing a picnic lunch and visiting with friends here.
It’s the Stuff Memories are Made Of
Over the years, we’ve made lots and lots of memories at this zoo, some with friends and extended family, some just us. We keep going back because, not only is the Cape May County Zoo one of our favorite zoos, it’s “our zoo.” We’ve seen our family grow and change at this zoo. Much like Disney, when we visit, it feels like “going home.”
We’re sure you will like it too! If you don’t believe us, there’s this:
