As a blogger, I may be compensated in some way (either pay, product, or experience) for sharing the post below All opinions are my own. ~Heidi
When my husband and I decided on a Disney Cruise for our 24th Anniversary, the single thing that I worried about and obsessed over the most was my wardrobe. I kept reading about how you were supposed to dress up for dinner. The term “cruise casual” was thrown around a lot, and I had no clue what that meant. I read a bunch of blog posts and websites; every one had a different opinion or idea. In the end, I was just as confused as I was when I started.
For the most part, I’m a very casual person. I don’t even like dressing up for church. About as dressy as it gets for me is a pair of black dress pants and a nice shirt. I wondered if this would be appropriate dinner attire. In the end, I decided to shop for a pair of black capris and several nice shirts. However, living in PA, it was nearly impossible to find these things in February! Stores didn’t have their Spring fashions out yet. I finally found a pair of black capris (not my favorite, but they would do). But, I could not find nice shirts that I felt were appropriate.
After several failed shopping trips, my frustration was mounting. The more frustrated I became, the less excited I was about the cruise.
What was I going to wear?!
I decided to reach out to some plus-size clothing stores and started with a store I used to love to shop at in our mall (it is, unfortunately, no longer located in our local mall) . . . Avenue.
I asked when their Spring clothing line would be hitting stores, explained my dilemma of needing to find some “cruise casual” dinner attire, and hoped for the best. After some back-and-forth discussion, I decided to try the Wavy Dot 2fer Top. I loved the colors, knew it would look great with black pants (because that’s what the model was wearing it with on the site), and knew I had the perfect jewelry to coordinate with it.
When the top arrived, I immediately tried it on and loved it so much that I went back on the Avenue website and ordered myself another shirt – it is a poncho-style shirt that I am no longer able to find on the website (glad I snatched it up when I did) – and a pair of cute denim capris. These things arrived right before we left for our cruise, so I quickly packed them up as well. I was feeling much more confident in my clothing choices.
How did I look?
I am far from model material! I’m short (probably about 5’3″) and not the least bit happy with my appearance right now (I’ve gained some stress-weight this past year that I just can’t seem to get off). I don’t like being the one in front of the camera, and my husband is probably the world’s worst photographer, but I want to share some pictures anyway . . .
I ordered both of these tops in a size 22/24. They both fit comfortably, and I felt very appropriately dressed for dinner when I was wearing them. My hubby seemed to like them too!
This picture was taken on the 2nd night of our cruise. Like I said, Brian’s photography skills are not that great, but that background is stunning, isn’t it? (I’m so glad we spent the extra on the verandah room!)
The next time, I decided to attempt a selfie with my phone! Just look at the beautiful blues in the shirt, with that gorgeous blue water in the background to compliment it! Even on me, I think it’s perfection!
Here we are, all ready for our last dinner on board the Disney Dream. Don’t we coordinate well?
I’m not one for posting full-body pictures, but this one was taken with our wonderful servers and, for the sake of really showing off the shirt, I’ll step out of my comfort zone. Our servers – at Royal Palace – were dressed like royalty. I have to say, I was feeling pretty royal as well!
All in all, I was very pleased with my choices and glad that Avenue had some Spring fashions available online.
I found another Avenue store about an hour from my house. I’m heading out this weekend in search of a pair of black dress pants to wear to homeschool conventions this Spring. Wish me luck!

I received one shirt free in exchange for sharing about it on my blog. I purchased the other one.
