Today is Gracie’s 15th birthday. Yesterday I was waxing nostalgic about how it seems like just yesterday that I took Gracie to her first piano lesson. Today, she is celebrating her birthday away from home – at jazz camp – where she’s learning how to play jazz piano. Yesterday she sent me a text about her audition and I had no idea what she was talking about. Jazz is a new endeavor for us, so I went to The Great Courses and ordered Elements of Jazz so that I can acclimate myself! I have to do my homework to keep up with this one!
Last week, I introduced you to a new series of posts that I’ll be sharing on my blog. Gracie and I are embarking on a #2yrmusicaljourney that will take us back in time and around the world as we study the great musicals. (Be sure to follow our hashtag as we share our adventures on social media also, in real time.)
Here is my Facebook status from last Thursday afternoon:
And therein lies Part 2 of our Musical Journey.
One of Gracie’s dreams was fulfilled last Wednesday evening. She really, really, really wanted to see Newsies. And, thanks to Laura from Better in Bulk for the great contest, and my cousin and his wife for providing lodging and city instructions, we made it happen!
Upon entering the theater, our first order of business was to buy a t-shirt (and, of course, we had to spend the extra $5 for the Newsies totebag too!) Then, we grabbed a Playbill and headed for our seats.
The show was absolutely amazing! I think it’s going to be hard to top! The singing and the dancing were above and beyond my expectations. Now, my mind is spinning with all the directions we can go to study this time period later on this year. But more on that later . . .
In response to my post last week, my friend Beth suggested checking out The Great Courses for a class on Broadway Musicals. It looked absolutely fabulous, so I’m looking forward to receiving it and adding it to our myriad of other study tools for our journey.
Up next on our Musical Journey will be to see Oklahoma at Dutch Apple Dinner Theater in July.
If you have any ideas of resources that we should be using in our studies
or theaters that are easily accessible from central PA, please do share!
Already this journey has taken us to places that we wouldn’t have planned on our own – so I’m excited to see where we might end up!
FYI: If you’re interested, the Newsies t-shirt pictured above is available at DisneyStore.com. [This is NOT an affiliate link.] The totebag (and other fun Newsies merchandise) is also available.
