Toward the end of 2014, I started a new little job . . . I have the opportunity of editing the posts over at my friend Leah’s website – Connected. Just in the few months that I’ve been reading and editing her posts, I’ve gotten quite an education regarding all the many apps that are available these days and how we can make the best use of social media.
Recently, Leah has put together an eBook that I think every parent of teens and/or tweens needs to read. It’s called Connected: Apps All Parents Should Know. Here’s a bit about the book:
These days, connecting is just a touch away. Literally! There are so many apps available that allow us to send messages or share photos with friends, family, and even strangers.. As parents, we must understand the social media applications available to our kids so we can have conversations with them about the pros and cons of each.
In this eBook, you will learn:
1. The Basics
2. Why Teens Like These Apps
3. What Parents Need to Know about all of the following:
- Social Networks like Facebook and Google+
- Microblogging Platforms like Twitter, Tumblr, and Pheed
- Video Sharing Apps like Vine, Snapchat, Clipchat, and Instagram
- Content Curration Apps like We Heart It and Wanelo
- Messaging Apps like Wickr, Confide, Poof, Whatsapp, Kik, TextNOW, Viber, WeChat, Line, and Oovoo
- Ask and Answer Apps like Ask.fm, Qooh.me, Secret, and Whisper
- Dating Apps like Tinder, Skout, Hot or Not, Badoo, Down, Omegle, ChatRoulette
- and more!
If you are the parent of a Tween or Teen, you really need to take this matter seriously! I’ve done all the research and homework for you. All that’s left is for you to familiarize yourself with what’s available to your kids on social media, get some healthy discussions started, and set some social media ground rules for your family.
Honestly, I had no clue about all these apps until I read this eBook. Chances are, you don’t either. Leah has done a LOT of research in order to put this book together. Why? Because she has a heart for families and she’s on a mission to make sure that each and every family is aware of the dangers of social media and can come up with a plan to use it in a safe and healthy manner. The first step in making that possible for your family is being made aware of the apps that your kids have access to and how they may be using them. Get the lines of communication open, parents!
This eBook is currently on sale for only $5. Trust me, it will be the best $5 you’ve spent this year. Read it, have your kids read it, then TALK!
