I’ve been a long-time fan of Lou Mongello. In fact, I’ve suggested both his trivia books and his audio CD’s on my Suggested Disney Resource List. Anybody who has been a part of the Disney blogging community for any length of time has surely become familiar with Lou’s name. He’s become well known as a source of knowledge on all-things Disney! His name has become synonymous with WDWRadio, where you will find “LIVE weekly online video broadcasts and chats covering Walt Disney World news and rumors, where the viewers can voice their opinions and thoughts, comment on the news in real-time, ask and answer questions, and be an interactive part of the live broadcast.”
When I heard that he was writing a book on ways to save money for and at Disney, I was excited to check it out! If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times – anyone can afford a trip to Disney! But, if you won’t take it from me, take it from Lou (he’s the expert, after all!)

Heidi Says . . .
I really enjoyed this book! I consider myself a seasoned Disney traveler now, and I’m also a professing cheapskate. Over the years, I’ve researched and learns lots of ways to save money and make our more frequent Disney trips a possibility (much to my husband’s chagrin). I can’t say that I learned much from reading the book, but the refresher course was nice!
However, that being said, as I was reading the book I was thinking what a great resource this would be for Disney Travel Agents to supply to their clients. One of the first things that Lou recommends in the book as a way to save money is to Use a Travel Agent (Way # 16). I was an anti-travel-agent-using, I-can-do-it-myself person. One day I decided to just test a travel agent, and I discovered that they really can save you a ton of money!
I think it would be great for that travel agent to supply his/her clients with a copy of this book as a way to continue saving money throughout the entire trip planning process!
I will be highly recommending this book to all Disney newbies and naysayers!
My Favorite Tips
In addition to the one mentioned above, here are some of my favorite tips from the book:
#3 – Apply for a Disney Rewards Visa
We are charter members of the Disney Visa and we’ve been able to save up enough points to purchase park tickets on several trips. More recently, we have totally paid for trips using our rewards! I cannot say enough how much of a blessing this has been for our family! We are spending the money anyway, so why not use our Disney Visa and earn some rewards toward a trip?
#36 – Don’t Rent a Car
For a family that always drove to Disney and had a car there and could get from here to there on our time, this one was tough for me; but I’ve relented on our past few trips and been at the mercy of Disney transportation and it’s really not that bad.
#85 – Skip the Sides
This was a new-to-me savings tip. . . when you order at a counter service restaurant, you don’t have to purchase the “value meal” – just order the sandwich (or main course) without sides and a drink, and you’ll save a nice chunk of change. We’ve often split a meal between two people, but this would certainly be a great idea if you’re traveling solo (or can’t agree with your partner’s meal choice!)
#92 – Bring or Make Your Own Autograph Books
This one is a favorite of mine. One of our favorite things to do over the years is to find or make unique autograph books. Not only do the characters love them, but they make excellent keepsakes, especially when they are personalized. We made these for a trip in January 2012, and when the kids and I returned in September of that same year, Jasmine RECOGNIZED us, based on our books!
I also really appreciated the bonus section, with 40 Free Things to Do, Get, See, Eat, and Collect! I’m all about free stuff!
Another awesome feature in the DIGITAL version is the live links! Lou has provided links to additional information and resources and all you have to do is click on them to access the goods. I’m not normally a fan of digital over print, but in the case of the ever-changing Disney, this is a huge advantage!
