Rainy days are often gloomy and cheerless. But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be that way? In fact, the rain just opens the door for other fun opportunities to enjoy quality time with your family. It is also a good way to show children how to make the best out of any situation, even if it isn’t what you originally had planned.
Even though the rain prevents your children from staying as active as they would outside, there are still ways to keep their brains active, which is just as important! There are a lot of fun indoor science activities that often use items that are already around the house that are fun and can enrich their minds! A fun way to blend science and learning with a fun surprise at the end is to make homemade ice cream! This saves the surprise that they are going to cool off with a treat until the end!
Another fun way to make the best of a rainy day is to set up an indoor scavenger hunt. Your children will love exploring every inch of the house to solve riddles. Here are a plethora of scavenger hunt ideas and printouts available on Pinterest to keep things interesting!
If your children are feeling creative, a fun activity to do during the day is to create sock puppets and put on a puppet show with their creations! Use markers to identify where you want to attach eyes or other features and be sure to help them if they want to sew buttons or use a hot glue gun to make their creations even more unique!
Another great suggestion for daytime fun is to try one of these indoor scavenger hunts. I love that they are fully customizable, making them personal for your own children/family. What a great activity for the whole family to participate in!
Night Time Ideas
The sun is down and it’s still raining cats and dogs, so now what is your family going to do? One great idea is to make it a family movie night! First thing is to set the stage – lower the lights, set up pillows and blankets, and if you’re really feeling adventurous, set up a theme for the movie you are going to watch!
Have the kids dress up in pirate costumes and practice their best pirate accents if they are watching a swashbuckling pirate flick, or if you are watching an 80’s throwback, listen to some classic 80’s tunes beforehand, make funky hairstyles with hairspray and wear some bright retro colors! There are so many ways to make movie nights even more fun!
Next thing is to get the snacks- popcorn is the obvious answer, but there are not many kids who would say no to ordering delivery for a pizza party movie night!
Lastly, when selecting the movie for the occasion, it sometimes is great to revisit a timeless classic off of the DVD shelf or rent a new release from Redbox, but if you are looking for something new to watch and don’t want to worry about prescreening the content, choose a great summer movie with Pure Flix and be confident that the content is clean and wholesome for the whole family!
Another fun night time idea is to have some artsy, ultraviolet fun with a blacklight! Revisiting the science theme, you can use laundry detergent to paint with and when you turn off the lights and turn on a black light, it will make their creations glow in the dark!
