Last weekend, my daughter Ashley and I had the privilege of spending the weekend at the Westin BWI in Baltimore for the Real Refreshment Retreat, hosted by Apologia. We weren’t actually attendees – rather, we were there as “staff” w0rking the Apologia booth and helping with other tasks, as needed. However, we were able to sit in on some of the speakers’ sessions, when there was a lull in traffic at the booth; so we got some refreshment as well!
So, this week I’m going to share
#1 – This is the time of year that many homeschool moms are starting to feel burn-out. If you’re a homeschool mom, and you’re feeling burned out, you’re not alone! I’ve been homeschooling for years now, and I feel it. It’s a combination of the winter blues, and just wanting to get finished with this school year and move on. Maybe it comes from feeling like I somehow failed at something this year, maybe it’s the result of not liking some of our curriculum choices. I don’t really know what causes it. But, it’s nice to know that I’m not alone in this feeling and that many other moms out there are feeling the same way.
#2 – The Real Refreshment Retreats do exactly what their name suggests . . .
- The speakers are REAL homeschool moms, just like you and me. They stand up there and pour their hearts out, sharing situations that they’ve been in, or are in currently. And guess what? They get it. They’ve been there, done that, and (in many cases) written the book! I’ve come to love and appreciate each and every one of these special ladies. They’re definitely real, and they’re not afraid to admit that they’ve made mistakes. But, they’re also full of encouragement, which leads me to the next point.
- At these events, homeschool moms are REFRESHED! What a perfect time of year to host these events – right when moms are facing burnout and thinking about putting the kids in public school! Instead, you go to Real Refreshment, listen to the speakers, feel encouraged and empowered, and head home ready to take on the world (or at least your homeschool!)
- We all need a RETREAT every once in awhile. Instead of climbing in the closet and locking the door, how about heading out and joining a bunch of other homeschool moms just like you?
#3 – Good customer service goes a long way. This one has more to do with my job than with the actual retreat, but I felt that it was worthy of sharing. I’m currently reading through a neat book called The Customer Rules by Lee Cockerell, and I’m realizing that many of the customer service “rules” that he lays out are things that Apologia is doing – and I’m proud to be a part of that! (I’d recommend the book – in fact, I’ll be doing a full review of it soon.)
