Have you ever had a family outing or fun event planned, only to have it ruined because you were suffering from heartburn? Heartburn is no fun and can definitely put a damper on your plans. I’ve had it various times and my 23-year-old daughter was recently suffering from an extended bout of it. It makes it difficult to schedule family fun when one member of your family is consistently not feeling well.
Family Game Nights
One of the things my family likes to do is to have Family Game Nights. After supper on a certain night of the week, we’ll clear the table and bring out some of our favorite games. Recently, we got some new games, along with a Fujifilm Instax camera and some popcorn; so we were all set for an evening of family fun!
Ian popped some popcorn and I set up the games. We started with 5-Second Rule. I had never played this game before and it was much harder than it sounds. Set a 5-second timer for yourself right now and see if, under pressure, you can name 3 things that fall into one of the following categories:
- high school sports
- penalties in football
- breeds of dog
- things not to do on a job interview
- ingredients in chocolate chip cookies
- cities in your county
- famous slogans
See what I mean? It’s hard! I think this game would be hilarious played in a group, but we were failing miserably at it! We did laugh a lot, though, and that’s all that matters, right?!
Next, we moved on to one of my all-time favorite games – Scattergories! I have always been a word game person, but not the Scrabble type.
My girls have each played Scattergories with me, but our game got ruined several years ago, so Ian has never had the chance to play. We were excited to get back into an old favorite and teach it to him. I was surprised by how well he did.
Of course, we had a lot of laughs playing this one too. It’s always fun to see who puts down the same thing or to try to think ahead and predict what others might write, so you try to choose something different.
While the box says it’s a fast-passed game, it was nothing like 5-Second Rule! We played through six rounds and I could have kept going, but the kids really wanted to take us on in Beat the Parents.
It was my husband and me against our oldest (23) and youngest (11), so we played a combination of adult and child cards. Even so, they still beat us! By quite a lot, actually. I guess they are both more up on current events or something!
We also have the Disney version of this game (which I don’t think they can beat me at!) Both versions are a lot of fun and a great addition to any family game night!
Document Your Memories
Normally for family game nights I have my phone handy and always snap a few pictures to post on Instagram or Facebook. I like to have the pictures to look back on later and remember our fun times together.
However, with the Fujifilm Instax camera, I put my 11-year-old in charge. He had so much fun taking the pictures and seeing them print out automatically. For me, it was a blast from the past. I was a kid in the 70’s when the old Polaroid cameras were a big deal, so it was fun for me too. I’m not sure his sisters were too crazy about him putting a camera in their face, but we got some fun photos to keep and put in a little Instax album.
We have since used the camera to take pictures of friends when they stop by for a visit and have added those pictures to our album as well.
Film for the camera comes in a 2-pack (10 pictures each) and sells for around $15. While that’s not necessarily cheap, it’s also not too much to pay for some fun! We may purchase several packs of film for an upcoming party we are hosting. I think it would be a fun keepsake for guests.
