I love music. Really, I love all kinds of music. But, when it comes right down to it, I want something I can sing along to. And I want it to mean something. So, when I really need some music therapy, I reach for a Christian Contemporary or Pop CD.
Why “Out of the Dark”?
When I received an e-mail asking if I’d be willing to review Mandisa’s new CD – “Out of the Dark” – I read the introduction and I couldn’t NOT review this one. Her story could be mine:
Mandisa wrote her song “Overcomer” in 2013 to encourage her close friend Kisha, who was battling breast cancer. Mandisa really believed and prayed that God was going to heal her, but when Kisha went to be with Jesus in 2014, Mandisa’s foundation was shaken in a way she never expected. She fell into a deep pit of depression for close to 3 years, shutting out her friends, family and the rest of the world. Mandisa believes if she had kept going down that road she was on, she would not be here today… but God stepped in and lifted her out of that pit by using her close friends to communicate their love for her and God’s love for her. This album is Mandisa’s way of letting her fans into her story – it’s called “Out Of The Dark” because that is exactly where God lifted her out of!
Like Mandisa, I also expected my friend to make it through her cancer journey – we had plans for how we would celebrate when she was healed. I questioned God for a long time after died. Then, one day it hit me – God must still have a plan for me or I wouldn’t still be here. And Sue sure wouldn’t want me wallowing in pity and sadness – she’d want me to smile and live.
I love Mandisa’s transparency in sharing her situation, her hurt, and her healing through song. These songs speak to me because they are my story too.

The song “Prove Me Wrong” will have special significance for anyone who has lost someone close to them and found themselves questioning God. When I saw the words, I wasn’t even sure if I could listen to it. Powerful!
