At our house, we LOVE music! I was raised on music, took piano lessons for years, and enjoyed singing at churches with my best friend. Ashley taught herself to play guitar, took voice lessons for a few years, and now sings in the praise band at our church. Gracie plays piano and violin, and has earned the position of Concert Mistress in this year’s orchestra. Ian has been singing since before he could talk (I used to think people who said things like that were exaggerating – but it’s true!) To this day (he’s 7 now), he sings pretty much non-stop. All this to say that we’re always on the lookout for new music, singers, and groups to listen to. Because, quite frankly, much like books, you can never have too much music!
Recently, I was offered the opportunity to check out a new cd from a Christian girls group called 1 Girl Nation. With a target audience of teen and tween girls, I thought our family would make great “testers” for this cd.
About 1 Girl Nation
Landing in the space where One Direction meets TobyMac, 1 Girl Nation is an exciting blend of upbeat pop music, with lyrics that are totally focused on living life for God, even while you’re young. 1GN, as they’ve already been dubbed, stars Carmen, Kayli, Kelsey, Lauryn Taylor and Lindsey, five girls with a passion for telling their fans about Christ through their music. Their first single, “While We’re Young,” can be heard on radio stations across the country and their self-titled debut album is available now!
Primary Audience: preteens, teens, and young adults (as well as parents, too!)
The first song – While We’re Young – talks about making the right choices now, while we’re young, so we don’t have to look back on our lives later and regret the decisions that we’ve made. “We’re going to live for Jesus while we’re young” is repeated over and over again in this song. I love it! What a great message for young girls today – and a great rebuttal to some other songs about being young that are in the mainstream today.
While most teen girls I know are obsessed with having or finding a boyfriend, 1 Girl Nation encourages being in love with God and focusing on that relationship is Live For You.
In the Eyes is more of a ballad and reminds girls that, no matter what their peers might be thinking of them, they are perfect in the eyes of the Father. They are treasured and beautiful in the eyes of the one who made them.
Count Your Rainbows is a catchy tune reminding us that you need the rain mixed with the sunshine in order to see the rainbows in our lives.
We saw Royal Tailor last year at Winter Jam, so my girls were excited to find a song – Love Like Crazy – featuring Royal Tailor.
I can honestly say there isn’t a single song on this album that we don’t like. While 1 Girl Nation appeals to both my girls – ages 13 and 20 – I really like them too. The songs are fun and many of them make you want to get up and dance! You’ll definitely find yourself moving to the beat, and singing along (at least, we do!)
