This month, I’ve decided to focus all of my trivia posts on Mary Poppins, in honor of the recent release of Saving Mr. Banks (loved it, by the way!). All of this month’s trivia tidbits come from Disney Trivia from the Vault: Secrets Revealed and Questions Answered by Dave Smith.
Did you know that there were male nannies in several scenes in Mary Poppins?
“There are, in fact, many men in the shots immediately before the nannies get picked up by the wind and whisked away. Back in 1964, most movie stunts were performed by men. In Mary Poppins, it probably helped that the nannies were supposed to look severe and strict, angular, and mannish.”
Honestly, I never picked up on this piece of trivia! Did you? We loved Saving Mr. Banks! Now, we keep saying we need to dust off our old VHS copy of Mary Poppins and watch it (too bad our only working VCR is attached to a very small TV!) Guess we’ll have to cuddle around it and check this out!
[UPDATED 1/13/14: We went out and bought the Blu-Ray copy of Mary Poppins and I took a picture of this very scene in the movie to share with you. I see several of these “nannies” that are more than likely “mannies,” don’t you?!]
