Let’s face it … parenting in today’s world isn’t always easy. Sometimes I feel like it’s an uphill battle to teach my kids good character skills when they’re exposed to peers, television, the internet, etc. These things are all working to teach them the exact opposite of the values that I’m trying to instill! Can anyone relate?
Enter the Family Honor Plate and Table Thyme Discussion Cards
Recently, I was introduced to these two products and I’m thrilled with them! If you’re looking for a great family Christmas gift for your own family or a family you love, definitely check this out. But, I’m getting ahead of myself in my excitement …
The Family Honor Plate
The Family Honor Plate is such a neat tool! It starts out as a simple craft kit that you can do with your child(ren). It comes with everything that you need to create your own personal plate creation for your family – the plate already comes with the Fruits of the Spirit printed in the middle. The kit includes 8 paint colors, 3 brushes, and a palette. You simply design the outside edge of your plate in whatever way you see fit, then bake it in your oven according to the package directions. The end result is a beautiful plate that you’ll want to display on the included plate stand.
I admit I’m normally a bit of a micromanager when it comes to crafts! However, I gave my 11-year-old son full creative license for designing the plate and painting it. I think he did a great job. (Some of the paint in our kit was a bit dried up but, because red is his favorite color, he insisted on using it anyway; hence the reason it looks a bit clumpy.) I think the plate turned out beautifully and was very proud to display it on our kitchen counter! Now, Ian is asking every day if he can use it for his supper.
But, here’s the catch …
The idea behind the Family Honor Plate is to help teach children good character by using the Fruits of the Spirit. So, how do we do that?
- (and most important!) We (parents) need to BE THE EXAMPLE!
- Be looking for ways that your child(ren) exhibit the Fruits of the Spirit throughout the day.
- Present their meal on the Family Honor Plate and discuss WHY (what they did and how it was important for themselves and others).
I’d encourage you to watch the video on the home page of the website for more detailed examples of this.
Table Thyme Discussion Cards
As if the plate weren’t amazing enough in and of itself, you can also get a spiral bound “tablet” containing over a year’s worth of family discussion starter questions. The back cover is even designed as a stand, so we have this tablet sitting on the hutch beside our dining room table for easy access during meal times. My son loves grabbing it and being the person introducing the questions each evening, and it has certainly prompted some discussions and memories that we wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Examples of some of the questions are:
- Who is your entire family do you wish you would see more often? WHY?
- What is your favorite season? WHY?
- If your friend were upset, what would you do to help them feel better? WHY?
- What is something that you don’t do right now but would like to someday? WHY?
Notice how all the questions end with WHY? That’s so there are no one-word answers allowed! Instead, you’re encouraged to expand on your answer with the WHY behind it. I love this!
For example, in answer to the first question, I answered that I’d like to see my cousin Angie more. The WHY is because we grew up very close – more like siblings – and saw a LOT of each other. Now, it seems like our lives are so far removed from each other, even though we only live 5 minutes away from one another. I’d like to spend more time with her.
I would encourage you to read more about the founder of the Family Honor Plate and Table Thyme Discussion cards – Michelle Webber – on the website. The story behind WHY she designed these products and decided to share them with the world is heartwarming. I, for one, am glad that she has shared her talents and her inspiration with other parents like me! I only wish I would have had these 2 products in our home years ago; but, it’s never too late!
Now, if you’d like to add either – OR BOTH – of these great products to your home (or gift them to a friend), you can purchase them direct through the website. Please note that purchasing 3 or more Family Honor Plates will give you 10% off the regular price of $39.95 each, while 3 or more Table Thyme Discussion Cards is 20% off the regular price of $19.95. Again, I’d encourage you to think of these are gifts for family friends.
