My favorite food this week: the Bunny Burger
Red Rabbit, Duncannon, PA
The Red Rabbit Drive-In is a long-standing tradition here in central PA. It opened in 1966, and has been serving up Bunny Burgers to the general public ever since. Ashley and I had a Girls’ Only evening a few weeks ago and, when deciding on a fun place to eat supper, we both agreed that it had to be the Red Rabbit. We felt guilty telling our family though. (But, obviously, not guilty enough to change our minds.)
The Bunny Burger is described as a “ground beef patty, hickory smoked bacon, melted cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, onions, and our own sauce, all on a special seeded roll.” The original Bunny Burger was served on a poppy seed roll. A few years back, they switched it up to a sesame seed bun, much to the chagrin of the die-hards. Now, for an added 35 cents, you can partake of the poppy seed bun again (praise God!)
Die-hards also know to order “fries with extra bunny dust.”
As a child, I’m pretty sure I got a grilled cheese at the Red Rabbit. But, quite honestly, anyone who’s crossed over to adulthood NEEDS to order the Bunny Burger. It’s like a rite of passage or something.
If you find yourself traveling along Rts. 11&15 through central PA, and it just so happens to be a weekend during the spring – fall months, make plans to stop here. You won’t be disappointed. Step back to a simpler time, and enjoy!
