How do you know you’ve arrived at Walt Disney World? Is it arriving at your resort hotel? Driving under the Walt Disney World arches? Walking right down the middle of Main Street USA?
I’ve heard – and probably answered with – all of these, and many more! There are so many things that make me feel like I’ve arrived “home” again. But, on the trips when I’m flying to Disney, I feel that I’ve arrived when my plane touches down at MCO and I board the Magical Express bus.
Welcome to this month’s Blogorail Blue Loop. Today we are sharing how we know we’ve “arrived” at Disney.
Touching Down at MCO
I’ll admit, MCO isn’t my favorite airport to fly out of. It takes FOREVER to get through security there (and that’s not an exaggeration).
But, from the moment I disembark from my plane and start walking through the airport, I definitely feel like I’ve arrived. There are signs everywhere leading you to the Magical Express transportation section, and there are also Disney Stores in the airport – Disney’s Earport and the Magic of Disney – one each in the Main Terminal, East and West. I see many people posting pictures with the large Mickey on the wall, though I always seem to be in too big a hurry to stop and take pictures in the airport. After all, I’ve arrived, and need to get on that bus bound for the Walt Disney World Resort!
(I have to also make quick mention of the fact that the airport makes it very obvious that several other favorite destinations are also close at hand – Universal Studios, Sea World, and Kennedy Space Center/NASA are each represented by 2 stores as well.)
Boarding the Magical Express
When you get off your plane, just follow the signs that lead you to the Ground Transportation section – Disney’s Magical Express will also be listed. It’s well-marked and easy to find.
One thing that you need to keep in mind when traveling to Disney is to make sure you have your Magic Band handy (I usually just wear mine). Your Magic Band will help ease your transition from the airport to the Magical Express bus.
Once you arrive in the area, just get in line and one of the agents will help you. Right away, you get that friendly Disney Cast Member experience that you’ve come to know and appreciate at the resorts and in the parks!
Based on the information on your Magic Band (or the paperwork you receive in the mail), they will know what resort you are heading to, and will tell you which line to get into. It’s quite easy! You just head to that line and wait (not so patiently, if you’re anything like me!)
Another Cast Member will tell you when it’s time to board your bus, and which bus to board. (Yay!) The bus driver will greet you, ask how many members are in your party, confirm which resort you are going to, and put any luggage under the bus (as needed).
Once you’re on the bus, settle in for the ride to Walt Disney World. It’s about a 30-45 minute drive, and could involve stops at a few other resorts along the way.
Your bus driver will let you know how long of a ride to expect and give you little details here and there throughout your ride. His/her name will be listed on a sign at the front of the bus. Be sure to thank your driver when you are dropped off at your resort (this seems like a no-brainer, but I see very few people who actually turn around and say “thanks” to the Disney bus drivers!) If you’re carrying Cast Member Thank You Notes, and your bus driver has been exemplary, please remember to hand him/her a card – you’ll make their day!
When your bus driver isn’t talking, you’ll be well-entertained by the overhead TV’s, which will play an assortment of Disney cartoons, trivia questions, and interesting videos. I enjoy seeing writers from the Disney Parks Blog sharing about new things in the parks (or, on the video pictured below, Gary Buchanan is talking about one of my favorite attractions – Living with the Land).
By the time you arrive at your resort, you’ll feel as though you’ve been at Disney for awhile! At least, I do! Between MCO and Magical Express, I know I’ve arrived at my home away from home!
